Where can I get my Social Security statement? - The Help Desk - CNN

Could you tell me the easiest way to get an updated Social Security statement? When I called on the phone I was put on hold and never got through. ? Bruce C.

The Social Security Administration's new online statement is the best way to keep track of your Social Security information, according to Kia Green of the SSA's press office.

Go to www.socialsecurity.gov and click on the "Get Your Social Security Statement Online" link that appears on the left side of the SSA's home page. Once there you'll need to create an account, which involves providing information such as your Social Security number, mailing address, name and age, and coming up with a secure username and password. From there you can view estimates for retirement, disability and survivors' benefits.

Green recommends people check their online statement once a year. "If the earnings information is not accurate, the person may not receive all the benefits to which he or she is entitled," says Green.

In some instances your identity may not be verifiable online. In that case you can request that a paper statement be mailed to you, or visit a Social Security office for help establishing an online account.
