Talk. Eat. Drink. Portland.: Macadam's Bar and Grill

5833 SW Macadam Avenue
Happy Hour: 3 - 6 and 10 - midnight daily, 3 - midnight Sundays
Happy Hour at Macadam's Bar and Grill is really just a heavenly discounted dinner. The portions are HUGE and the prices are low. It's a pretty fantastic place to be whether you want to sit out on the patio or stay inside and take advantage of the shuffleboard, pool tables, and live music. Happy hour runs from three to six daily and again from ten to close. And on Sundays, you can enjoy the cheap eats and discounted drinks from three until midnight.
We stopped in on a Friday evening and we were just early enough to make the happy hour. There are a lot of places around Portland that are almost impossible to get to for happy hour if you don't plan an early start. At Macadam's, it's not really an issue. They have so much seating you're almost guaranteed to get a table. And the service during happy hour (all the time, really) is pretty fantastic. Our server even offered to put in an extra drink for us so that we'd get the discount before happy hour pricing ended. (And I was nowhere near done with the first one.) That's going beyond expectations.
What really impressed me, though, was the amount of food that you get for so SO very little. Seriously, I ordered a salad for two dollars and it was HUGE. And it wasn't just lettuce (like at so many places). The mixed greens were topped with dried cranberries, pepitas, shredded carrots, grape tomatoes, and house-made croutons (made with a mixture of breads). The salad dressing (I chose blue cheese - my usual) must have also been house-made because it was fantastic. The flavors and the crunch went so well together. (I am adding pepitas to the grocery list so I can put them in the salads I make at home.) And, because I know it's hard to believe without hearing it a second time, the salad was only TWO DOLLARS. Such a value!
Also a great value was the plate of pork tacos. My fiance decided on them(six bucks on the happy hour menu) over the fish tacos--his new favorite--that are listed on the regular dinner menu for $11. The pork tacos are one of the most expensive things on the menu, yes...but for three very large (and somewhat overflowing) tacos, the six-dollar price tag was a bargain. The three soft tortillas were covered in slow-roasted pork, house-made kimchee, shredded cabbage, and a chipotle sour cream.
The plate of macaroni and cheese that was delivered with the pork tacos was also quite substantial. I would have loved to have a little kitchen scale out there to weigh the dish. It was huge. And it was cheesy. Almost too cheesy (which is something I rarely say).
We were sitting outside for happy hour so it seems most appropriate that we both opted for white wine. Wine, beer, and well drinks are all discounted during happy hour. They do have some rather tempting fancy cocktails on the menu, though. I'll have to go back again and again to work my was through the list...that's how good they looked. And every time, I'll order a two dollar salad. Or maybe two.
