Cycling Equipment for the Serious Athlete

Cycling equipment is more than just a bicycle. For the serious athlete, there are a number of accessories and accoutrements that are needed in order to ensure a productive and safe ride. For those who compete in races, buying the right equipment is even more important.

As a minimum benchmark, you should always have the following with you when you are going on a cycling excursion:

  • Your bike: This is obvious, of course. You need your bike, if you're going to go biking! Make sure your tired are pumped up and everything is in order before you go.
  • Water Bottle: Depending on the length of your outing, have at least two or three bottles, ready to go. You don't want to get dehydrated halfway through your trip.
  • Helmet: This will protect you in case of a fall or mishap. Ensure that it is fitted properly and doesn't have any cracks or holes
  • Gloves: This will give you a better grip on the handlebars. Gloves that wick moisture away from your skin will ensure that you don't have that sweaty, clammy feel.
  • Shoes: The right fitting shoes will make sure you are comfortable throughout your ride. As cycling equipment goes, shoes are one of the most important. You don't want your feet to get too tired, or cramped.
  • Repair Kit: Have an emergency kit handy in case you need a quick fix for your tires, gears or other accessories.
  • Flashlight: Even if you don't plan on being out at night, it's a good idea to have this in case plans change or you find yourself in the dark unexpectedly. Check the batteries before you go!
  • Apparel: Shirts, pants, shorts, shoes, socks and jackets are all important, and buying these quality items will make sure that you are comfortable from beginning to end.
  • Bike Lock: If you need to stop along the way and buy something, you will be able to prevent anyone from stealing your stuff.
  • Backpack: You obviously need a bag to hold all of your belongings; the lighter the better. Try not to get anything too big or bulky.
  • Cell Phone/GPS: You need to be able to call someone if you find yourself in trouble or if your plans change and you will not be back in time. Most cell phones have built-in GPS units, but if yours doesn't buy a separate one to take with you.
  • A Healthy Snack: A granola bar or piece of fruit will do you wonders when you get tired and think you can't go any further. This cycling equipment will leave your taste buds and your stomach happy! ?
