Justin Verlander, other Detroit Tigers not on U.S. roster for World Baseball Classic

Justin Verlander's focus appears to be locked in on spring training and the Detroit Tigers' 2013 season.

Verlander was among the names missing from the initial U.S. roster released for the World Baseball Classic, and that's by his choice.

There's no Prince Fielder or Max Scherzer, either.

Notorious for his strict spring workout regiment, Verlander has been in Lakeland since Jan. 6. The WBC would be an interruption to a routine that has helped make him baseball's most dominant pitcher over the last two years.

The only current Tigers player committed to the WBC is third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who will compete for his native Venezuela.

Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante could join Cabrera when the rest of Venezuela's roster is released at 4 p.m. (MLB Network). Detroit has said it would not clear Victor Martinez to take part as he covers from a torn ACL.
