Surreal Lunar Orbit Footage From Doomed GRAIL Mission

ShareShare ?ShareEmail ?PrintPrint

On December 17th 2012 two small spacecraft called Ebb and Flow punched into the lunar surface at over 3,700 miles an hour.

This ended the year long mission of NASA?s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL). The twin spacecraft spent most of this time orbiting the Moon?s surface at a scarily low altitude of about 31 miles, sweeping in tandem above the dusty terrain never more than 140 miles apart from each other.

Microwave telemetry between the spacecraft, the Earth, and the application of basic geometry let GRAIL monitor the distance between Ebb and Flow to a precision of about a tenth of a micron ? half the width of a human hair.

As with any planet or satellite the Moon?s gravitational field is not perfectly symmetrical. Variations in the density and height of material produce tiny variations in the gravitational acceleration felt by other objects. By sensing Ebb and Flow?s varying movement in orbit a detailed map of the lunar gravity field was constructed. With a knowledge of the topographic features on the surface this can be turned into the equivalent of a medical tomographic reconstruction of the lunar interior ? and it?s lumps and bumps.

The data is amazing, but GRAIL had one last gift to give. In the days leading up to their crash on the lunar surface the spacecraft returned imagery from their ever lowering orbits.

This is the quite surreal and beautiful timelapse footage taken by Ebb as it skimmed across part of the northern terrain of the Moon?s far side at an altitude of only 6 miles on December 14th 2012. Enjoy.

In picking Lew, Obama turns a page at Treasury

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jack Lew, President Barack Obama's nominee for treasury secretary, is a premier federal budget expert who would take the helm of the government's main agency for economic and fiscal policy just as the administration girds itself for a new confrontation with congressional Republicans over the nation's debt and deficits.

Obama will nominate Lew on Thursday afternoon, continuing to put a second-term imprint on his Cabinet by choosing yet another close ally to a key government post.

A year ago, almost to the day, Obama appointed Lew as his chief of staff, taking him from his perch as director of the Office of Management and Budget into the White House's tight inner circle.

In selecting Lew to replace Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Obama not only picks an insider steeped in budget matters but also a tough bargainer. Some Republicans complain that Lew has been unyielding in past fiscal negotiations, particularly the failed talks for a large deficit reduction deal in the summer of 2011. Some have bristled at what they say is a greater desire by Lew to persuade them rather than negotiate.

If confirmed, Lew would assume the post in time for the administration to tangle anew with Republicans over a confluence of three looming fiscal deadlines ? raising the $16.4 trillion federal borrowing limit, averting automatic spending cuts to defense and domestic programs, and the expiration of a congressional resolution that has been keeping the government operating. Those three events, if unresolved, would have a far greater negative effect on the economy than the "fiscal cliff" that Obama and Congress avoided a week ago.

Lew, 57, has often been described as a "pragmatic liberal" who understands what it takes to make a deal even as he stands by his ideological views.

"He's a political guy. He didn't get where he is today by being a shrinking violet," said Paul Light, a public policy professor at New York University and an acquaintance of Lew's. "But he's really a doer. He's the kind of guy you want at the table if you want to get something done."

One senior Republican senator, Alabama's Jeff Sessions, voiced opposition to Lew. But while Lew may face a tough confirmation in the Senate, he's not likely to encounter the type of stiff opposition that is already mounting against former Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican whom Obama has tapped to be his defense secretary.

"We need a secretary of treasury that the American people, the Congress and the world will know is up to the task of getting America on the path to prosperity not the path to decline," said Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee. "Jack Lew is not that man."

Initial reactions from the business and financial sectors, however, were far more positive.

"One of the realities of Mr. Lew's appointment is the challenges we face in the country right now -- the cliffs we have in front of us," said Thomas Donohue, the president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "I think Jack is a very experienced fellow on the issues of debt, deficits and budgets."

Donohue called Lew a "skilled operative," a "vigorous and strong person," and a "tough dude."

Rob Nichols, the president and CEO of the Financial Services Forum, a major banking industry group, said: "Given his experience in the government and private sector, Mr. Lew is well-suited for the job especially at a time when Washington must come together to address our debt situation and put our nation on a long-term fiscally sustainable path."

Lew's nomination is the fourth major personnel change in the administration since Obama's re-election. Obama tapped Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., for the State Department, Hagel to lead the Pentagon and White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan for the CIA's top job.

One prominent woman in Obama's Cabinet, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, resigned her post Wednesday. No successor has been named.

Lew was a top aide in the 1980s to House Speaker Tip O'Neill, a Massachusetts Democrat, playing a role in the Social Security deal between the speaker and President Ronald Reagan in 1983.

Before becoming Obama's chief of staff, Lew was director of the Office of Management and Budget, a post he also held back in the Clinton administration, serving from 1998 to early 2001. While running OMB during the Clinton administration, Lew helped negotiate a balanced budget agreement with Congress, something that has eluded Washington ever since.

But while the bulk of his experience is in Washington, Lew also worked on Wall Street as managing director and chief operating officer of Citi Global Wealth Management and then Citi Alternative Investments. At the start of the Obama administration, he oversaw international economic issues at the State Department.

Despite his stint on Wall Street, Lew doesn't have the type of financial experience that Geithner brought to the job at the height of the financial crisis in 2009. Indeed, there's not as much of a premium on those skills now as the nation's attention has turned from bank bailouts to fiscal confrontations and brinkmanship.

Still, Lew will have to address other significant challenges, including completing implementation of the financial regulatory overhaul of 2010.

Lew will probably play a key role in deciding the fate of government-controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the federal housing agencies partly blamed for the collapse of the housing market.

Internationally, he will also be the administration's point man on issues related to China's integration into the global economy and Europe's sovereign debt and financial struggles. The issues aren't foreign to Lew. While a deputy secretary of state early in the Obama administration, Lew managed the State Department's international economic policy portfolio.

For all that, Lew faces a better landscape than Geithner did when he stepped into the post at the start of Obama's first term.

"The basic financial position and economic position of the country is much stronger today that it was four years ago," said Michael Barr, who was assistant treasury secretary for financial institutions in 2009 and 2010. "That's a significant advantage for a treasury secretary coming in."

Mitch Ditkoff: How to Go Beyond Self-Improvement

In 2012, more than five million books were published worldwide.

Of these, a sizable percentage were of the "self-help" variety, a growing genre that promises to help people improve the quality of their lives -- to become happier, healthier, smarter, kinder, thinner, cooler, richer, less depressed, selfish, anxious and, generally speaking, better in countless ways that society uses to define what it means to be a successful human being.

At the core of the self-help book world is a fundamental assumption around which all of the writing revolves -- that there is a self to improve -- an essence at the core of a human being that is flawed and needs some tweaking.

And while this assumption certainly attracts a lot of book buyers, there is another kind of book, beyond self-improvement, that addresses an even more basic theme -- not improving the self, but knowing the self -- what sage Greek philosophers were referring to, centuries ago, when they distilled the purpose of life down to two simple words: know thyself.

This is the province of the newly published The Greatest Truth of All: You Are Alive! (21 excerpted talks of Prem Rawat) -- a 198-page book that awakens, inspires, and demystifies the so-called "search for self."

The message of the book is profoundly simple -- one that Prem Rawat has, primarily, been delivering orally for the past 40 years via live presentations -- that it is possible for all seven billion people on planet Earth to experience peace -- no matter what their profession, social style, tax bracket, or education.

Written in a highly engaging, breezy style, The Greatest Truth of All offers the reader easy access to a topic too often dismissed as esoteric, "spiritual", or woo woo.

Prem Rawat, very much a modern man with a well-developed sense of humor and a gift for story telling, has found a way to decode the essence of "self-knowledge" and delivers it, to the reader, like a tall, cool drink of water on a hot summer day.

So... if you're looking for a powerful "best practice" to help you connect with the core of who you truly are, this book might be for you.

Leveraging Social Media for SEO In Light of the Google Panda Update

Since it was first rolled out, Google Panda has undergone several refreshes. Now that the dust raised by the initial upheaval has settled down, the Panda updates have actually proved to be a boon to companies offering customer-centric content. First and foremost, it serves as an effective filter in weeding out poor quality content. More importantly, it negates the need for businesses to engage in expensive and, as defined by Google, unethical SEO practices to stay on top of the ranking index. This levels the playing field and makes value offered by your content the key criterion for SEO success.

Let?s look at how you can assimilate the various measures under Google?s Panda updates to reap rich dividends for your business.
Search Engines Are Increasingly Aware Of Social Signals

Google is omnipresent on social media through the ownership of channels such as YouTube, Picasa, Orkut, Google+, and BlogSpot. The introduction of the +1 application was the first visible indicator of how this is going to impact their search engine strategy. The more the number of +1s a particular content piece receives, the higher the chances of it being positioned further up the content ranking value chain.

This trend of combining social media and search is not limited to Google alone. Even Microsoft and Yahoo announced an alliance with Twitter that will provide Bing and Yahoo greater access to the content listed on Twitter. This increases the likelihood of relevant tweets being presented as search results.

Key areas that you need to explore to improve your search engine rankings include:

??Twitter Links: Twitter?s Firehose technology provides its partners the option of real-time search for relevant content. As a result, links that you post on Twitter will get picked up by these partners thereby increasing the hits for your site.

??Public pages on Facebook: A business page on Facebook can positively influence your search engine rankings and provide a boost to your SEO program, especially if you have an integrated digital marketing strategy and knowledge of the right keywords.

??Google Social Search: The search engine giant?s ?Search plus Your World? feature is an attempt to leverage Google+ to rank information on the basis of what your network recommends or creates.

??Video channels: The world is going the audio-visual way. Create a YouTube channel and upload interesting videos that will get you shares and likes.
Incorporating Social Media Into Your SEO Strategy

Using social media offers several SEO advantages to your business.

??Social Signals: Increasing the number of views, shares, +1s, likes, and tweets will get you noticed by search engines. Social signals currently account for more than 10% of organic search algorithms.

??Interactive exchanges: Consumers are discussing your brand online and influencing buying decisions. You need to be part of such conversations and engage your target audience to create a positive influence.

Some quick actions you can take:
??Create a Google+ business page
??Add social sharing buttons across all your communications
??Build networks on various social media platforms
??Create communities and engage people in discussions about your brand
??Enable geo-tagging
??Earn reviews and rating on social sites
How to Use Social Media to Improve Rankings

Ensure that you have an optimal number of authoritative followers on social media platforms. If your social media activity decelerates then your ranking is likely to take a hit. Put in place a strategy to maintain consistency. Additionally:

??Share high quality content: Google?s key objective behind the Panda Updates was to penalise websites hosting low quality content.

??Build natural relationships: Identify social media communities where people interested in your products or services usually congregate, and engage in mutually beneficial discussion.

??Identify the right social media channels: Not all social media channels are likely to prove equally beneficial. If your focus is B2B, a Facebook page might not work for you. You need to identify the ones that fit your business objectives.

??Employ tactics that will improve SEO: Due to privacy policies, social media channels place technical restrictions on the data that can be presented in results. Get an expert to guide you on how to use these channels for SEO.

??Apply keyword strategy: Your web strategy can no longer be executed in isolation. Leverage your keyword strategy on social media channels.

Increased Visibility Throws Open New Opportunities
Social media optimisation is complex and requires a well thought out integrated strategy, dedicated resources, and consistent execution. It can work wonders for your business in the following ways:

??You will see more qualified visitors flocking to your website
??Likes, shares, and tweets will get your brand noticed
??Geo-tagging could win the business of non-locals
??Your responses on online communities can position you as a solutions expert
??Disseminating content through social platforms can generate high quality backlinks
??Your social network can become a loyal customer base

If you don?t have the time or resources, consider engaging the services of an expert. You can gain from their experience and also shorten the learning curve. Contact your local WSI Consultant to incorporate social into your SEO strategy and improve your brand?s visibility.

Obama nominates Jack Lew to succeed Geithner at Treasury

Since Google Earth launched in 2005, there have been dozens of mysterious images (supposed planes and bunkers, even the face of Jesus) captured by the satellites used for the virtual mapping program. But according to Allen Thomson, this one may be the weirdest. Thomson, a former CIA analyst, was recently using Google Earth while searching [...]

Vegan Food Swap ? December ? Thank you to Ms One Small ...

Last month I?received?and sent a vegan food swap to Sasha of One Small Vegan. I enjoy her blog a lot because she?s always cooking something up, and it?s inspiring. I haven?t been cooking or baking as much as I?d like to, so it?s nice to see some encouraging and delicious treats on a regular basis.

After been whisked away to (not-so)far away lands for my birthday, I had to wait until I got back to Toronto to finally open up my swap pack from Sasha, and then upon coming back from our trip, I?immediately?caught the flu and wasn?t in much of a position to write anything about anything. So now I?m catching up.

Biscotti

Sasha made several things herself, like a delicious Orange Chocolate Chip Biscotti from Veganomicon and two things from a book I?ve been eyeing Vegan Food Gifts by Joni Marie Newman.

Cookies

Candied Nuts

She included the recipe for Candied Nuts from Vegan Food Gifts which I?m going to have to try and make happen soon, they were delicious. I?m drinking one of the warm spicy teas she included right now.

Sasha also sent me a Chocolate Raspberry SweetLeaf (a stevia sweetner) which I?ve been curious about. Since I?ve removed most artificial?sweeteners?from my life, I?m excited to try this stevia based one.

And finally, in addition to a nice selection of teas, Sasha sent a Vega Maca Chocolate Bar which was delicious. I?ve tried their protein drinks, but I hadn?t seen the chocolate bars. Delicious!

Thanks Sasha! I hope you enjoyed your swap too!

State Insurance Commissioner Calls Anthem Blue Cross' Rate Hikes ...

(credit: David McNew/Getty Images)

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)?? California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones is accusing Anthem Blue Cross of placing an ?unreasonable? rate increase on small businesses.

Jones, who says Anthem?s small business customers are facing an average annual increase of 10.6 percent each year, doesn?t have the legal authority to reject excess rate hikes.

However, a measure that?s qualified for the Nov. 2014 ballot may change that.

Anthem spokesmen Darrel Ng says the rate increase is actually closer to 6.5 percent. If changes and benefits are included, the number is 7.5 percent.

?We find no basis in mathematics for his numbers,? Ing told KNX1070.

Jones accuses Anthem of unlawfully charging for fees that will not be collected until next year under the Affordable Care Act.

Ng says the fees only apply to contracts that extend to 2014. The increase is pro-rated over 12 months.
