Feeding for the winter | Princeton Veterinary Hospital

As it gets colder, our outside animals will need to burn more calories in order to stay warm. It is important that we adjust their feeding to make up for these extra calories. But it?s a fine line ? increasing their daily food too much can result in overweight animals very quickly! Just like for people, extra weight seems to be very easy to put on, but very difficult to take off. We have given you recommendations about how to feed your cats, dogs, and horses, but some of these recommendations need to be modified during the cold months. Follow these 7 steps to maintain your animals at a healthy weight all year long.

barn cats eating

  1. Assess your pet?s weight. You can use your bathroom scale for cats and smaller dogs to weigh them. For larger dogs or horses, this is not possible. Instead, use a body condition score for dogs and horses (there is also a body condition score for cats). We want all our animals to have a body condition score of 3 out of 5 (or a score of 5 on the 9-point scale for horses). A body condition score of 3 (or 5 on a 9-point scale) is ideal ? you can feel your pet?s ribs as you run your hands down their sides but they don?t stick out and they are not covered with an ?extra? layer of fat.
  2. Know how much you are feeding your pets every day. Are you pouring dry food into a bowl and letting them eat all day long? When you feed the next time, measure how much you are feeding. You can use a measuring cup or any container. Make sure that you are feeding the same amount every time.
  3. Increase the amount of feed during the cold months. This doesn?t mean your dog has free access to the 50-pound bag of dog food, or that your horse gets turned loose in the barn with the hay and sweet feed! Increase the feed by 25% or less of their normal amount. (If you are feeding 1 cup of dry dog food every day, increase this up to 1-1/4 cups a day. If your horse gets 1 scoop of sweet feed, increase this up to 1-1/4 scoops.)
  4. For livestock (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, and llamas), make sure they they have plenty of fresh, good-quality hay. This roughage is a very important part of their diet, especially in the winter.cows eating hay
  5. Check their weight and/or body condition score every 2 weeks. Small changes in weight and body condition can be difficult to notice when you are looking at your pet every day. Keep track of their weight and body condition regularly. If they are losing weight or body condition (getting thinner), increase the amount of food they are getting. If they are gaining weight or body condition (getting heavier), decrease the amount of food they are getting.
  6. When the weather gets warmer, make sure to decrease their food again! As we head into spring and the weather warms up again, your animals won?t need to use as many calories to stay warm. You can decrease their food back down to their normal, pre-winter, amounts.
  7. Make any changes in food gradually. Whether you are increasing or decreasing the amount of food your animals are getting, be sure to make this change gradually. Eating too much too fast can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhea. Horses that eat too much grain can colic or founder. Ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, and llamas) that eat too much corn or grain can also have stomach problems.

Do you need some help figuring out your pet?s body condition score? Do you have questions about how much food to give your animals during the winter? Bring your dog or cat in, or schedule an appointment for us to examine your horse or other farm animals. We can show you how to evaluate your pet?s body condition, look at what you are feeding now, and make recommendations to keep your pets at the ?right? weight.

Daily Kos: Rhee's StudentsFirst grades education on ideology, not ...

Michelle Rhee continues her descent into parody. You might have thought that teaching students to read would be a good way to evaluate educational performance, but no. Rhee's StudentsFirst organization has released a report card grading states?on their education policies, not their educational results. In fact, not one of the states StudentsFirst ranks in the top five is in the top half of states on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, "the nation's report card," when it comes to eighth grade reading scores, and only one is in the top half when it comes to eighth grade math.
  • Louisiana is the top-rated state, according to StudentsFirst. It ranks 49th of 51 on eighth grade reading scores and 47th of 51 on eighth grade math scores.
  • Florida is StudentsFirst's second-best state according to ideology. According to educational results, Florida is 35th on reading and 42nd on math.
  • StudentsFirst says Indiana is third. The "nation's report card" says it's 30th on reading and 23rd on math.
  • The District of Columbia, where Rhee had her way from 2007 to 2010, comes in fourth according to Rhee's ranking system. According to the NAEP? Dead last.
  • Rhode Island is fifth in Rhee-land. It's 29th in both reading and math on the NAEP.

By contrast, of the 11 states Rhee rates as having the worst policies for education, three are in the top six for eighth grade reading scores on the NAEP, and four more are in the top 20. Another contrast: The three highest-scoring states on reading are Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Rhee scores them 14th, 21st and 18th.

Bear in mind that this complete disregard for educational results as measured by the gold-standard standardized test comes despite the fact that the StudentsFirst report card ranks states more highly for relying on standardized testing in teacher evaluations. (One reason the NAEP is the gold standard, by the way, is that it's less likely to be the subject of the kind of cheating that seems to have happened in D.C. under Rhee's leadership since it's not high-stakes so the incentive to cheat is low.)

And complacent reporters will aid StudentsFirst in spreading its grades without questioning their basis. In the New York Times, for instance, Motoko Rich notes only that "The ratings, which focused purely on state laws and policies, did not take into account student test scores," and not the upside-down relationship between the ratings and the scores. The Washington Post's Valerie Strauss is much, much better, as usual.

I've lost count of the times I've pointed to some egregious action by StudentsFirst or Rhee herself and said "if you needed proof it's not about putting students first, here it is." But if you still need proof of that, the fact that StudentsFirst is grading states not on how the students in those states are doing but on a set of corporate-backed policies that are at best unproven, and that the StudentsFirst results are actually negatively correlated with the best national measure we have of student achievement ought to do the trick.

Filing for a different type of bankruptcy is a good idea if you think you will lose your home. Try Chapter 13 instead of Chapter 7. Since it may be better to file Chapter 13 rather than Chapter 7, make sure your attorney presents all of your options to you.

You should not be ashamed that you?re filing for bankruptcy. It?s typical for people who file to feel like failures. If you?ve done adequate research and rationalized about whether it?s the best option, do your best to look at it as a step towards success with your finances.

Know that you are able to re-file if you?ve made a mistake in filing for bankruptcy. The majority of the time, though, the automatic stay is in place for just one month when this occurs. If you can convince the judge that you have a good reason for your mistake and re-filing, you may get that stay extended.

Pay attention to how you satisfy any personal debts before filing for bankruptcy. There are bankruptcy laws which forbid repayment of some creditors within three months before filing. In the case of family members, this period of time may extend to a full year. So, before you ultimately decide to file a claim, be sure that you understand the rules in place.

Don?t let shame consume you during the bankruptcy process. Feelings of low self-worth, shame and guilt are common for those who have come to the point where bankruptcy is their only option. Learn to accept these feeling at face value? you can?t prevent yourself from feeling them, but you can stop them from controlling you. Keep your mindset positive while you work through financial troubles such as bankruptcy to reduce stress and have an easier time coping.

Before your appointment with your bankruptcy attorney, jot down any questions that you can think of. Attorney?s are costly so be sure to get a free consultation to interview several lawyers before you hire one. Your iPhone Will Soon Detect Bad Breath - Business Insider

We've told you before that smartphones and PCs are becoming more human, with their ability to see (camera) hear (phone) and feel (gyro/accelerometer).

Now, a tiny San Francisco startup, Adamant Technologies, is trying? to give your iPhone the senses of smell and taste, too.

The company has created a computer chip that works with a bunch of tiny sensors that "can take the sense of smell and taste and digitize them," explains Sam Khamis, Adamant's founder and CEO.

This is not about turning your smartphone into some kind of scratch-and-sniff thing that emits scent. It's about letting your phone or computer or other medical devices smell for themselves.

This was a pretty tricky problem to solve. A computer can easily identify a chemical in the air, but put a bunch of them together and it's stumped. For instance, humans can tell when there's pizza and chocolate chip cookies in the same room. Computers have a harder time with that.

The sense of smell he's developed is pretty sophisticated, too, he says. The average human nose has about 400 "sensors" that pick out various chemicals in the air and identify them (like knowing what pizza smells like). Adamant's tech has about 2,000 sensors, which is akin to a dog's nose, Khamis explained.

iPhone apps from Adamant are still some time away from being available, maybe one-to-two years. Right now, the San Francisco company, which is backed by legendary venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, is just beginning to mass produce its chips in a plant in Austin, Texas.

Next it will produce a consumer device that plugs into an iPhone and costs $100 or less. That device will then be used with all sorts of apps, including one that can warn you when your breath smells bad.

"Halitosis, or bad breath tracking, is something we're really interested in," he laughs. It's the kind of thing that not even "your best friend will tell you." The app will not only warn you, but tell you what caused it, he says.

Other planned apps include realtime metabolic tracking, meaning telling you exactly how many calories you are burning at any given moment. He also sees breathalyzer apps that can monitor medical conditions, like diabetes, or test blood alcohol.

Adamant raised $2.5 million from Khosla over the summer and will be seeking a bigger round later this year.

Why aren't we innovating? ? iMediaConnection Blog

The pace of marketing change today, driven by digital innovation and technology - has us all focusing on the latest tools, platforms and models of engagement. Obsessed with the ?how? instead of the ?why?, we struggle to truly innovate and find ourselves swimming in a sea of sameness. We all create the same gift finders, music playlists, look books, and Facebook apps with the intention of simulating a ?friendship? with brands and other fans.

In the rush to define a new marketing model or invent the digital future, we?ve lost perspective of what drives people and have missed the opportunity to truly reinvent, to establish deep, relevant connections with people ? not audiences, not fans, not prospects, or consumers ? people. Ultimately, in our urgency, we?ve forgotten a simple human truth: our innate desire to connect with one another, to forge authentic relationships that have meaning in our lives.

Instead of focusing on tools and mechanisms for reaching people today, we should focus on creating experiences that enhance what the brand enables people to do day-by-day. Before creating another Facebook canvas app, let?s ask ourselves ? what experience is authentic to the brand and would allow our consumers to enhance their passions? Or more simply ? what could we be doing that would create more value for the consumer and why?

This shortsightedness has us all clamoring to discover the next big thing, but in doing so, we?re failing to peer not merely over the horizon, but inside our own horizons. The next big thing should be a shift in our model.

We need to move away from thinking of ourselves as the architects of brand stories to the architects of brand relationships. If relationships are the new economy, then we have to change the way the game is played. Therefore whatever we do needs to come from these core principles:

1) Establish a relationship based on giving, not receiving. Innovation comes from putting consumer needs first ? simply provide value, utility and service to consumers and they will reciprocate. Consumers don?t want to spend time in complicated systems of rewards and heavy immersive engagements. Giving doesn?t need to be complicated ? take for example, HP?s sponsorship of the Lorax movie. It would have been easy for the brand to use this platform to push eco-friendly products, but instead, HP supported the Lorax message by pushing environmentally friendly learning, delivered through social sharing and giving to the World Wildlife Fund.

2) Connect people with each other. Create new ways to bring people together based on what they care about and provides value. Technology can isolate us as much as it can connect us. We crave human connections and seek relationships that have genuine meaning and substance. Brands need to offer new ways for connecting people based on their passions rather than fragmenting them in their own isolated brand communities. This is one of our core philosophies here at DK ? to be connectors ? instead of replicating platforms that already exist, we ask ourselves how we can support existing ecosystems or create content in service of a real consumer need and genuine connection. Be a conduit for people and their interests ? be the Reddit of their world.

3) Be transformational in your problem solving. Focus on where you can create transformational value, utility and connection for people and do something that?s never been done before. Set your aim higher - stop reading trade publications and following what other brands are doing. Take Uber for example, it?s not that conventional taxi service was broken; it was just an industry that had fundamentally remained unchanged for 70 years. In today?s world- traditional taxi service was falling short, it was inconvenient for both the driver and the rider. Uber identified this as an opportunity to create a new value chain directly connecting passengers and drivers to cut out the middleman. For this, people are willing to pay a premium. Brands such as Uber, Netflix, AirBnB have become great disruptors and are true innovators. Ask yourself- what value could you be creating for consumers?

4) Differentiate. Products that stand out and provide a killer experience and unique value to consumers don?t need to market themselves. The product itself is the marketing. The iPhone launch is a great example of this ? they just needed to show people what was possible. Brands that live in an undifferentiated space, rely on people at the shelf to determine the products? value or worth. Do you want to take a back seat in your category, or set the benchmark?

We have a tendency in the industry to focus internally and deconstruct the mechanics of the most successful brands in an effort to replicate their success. At the agency we see countless client briefs with the same mandate - ?We need to create the next big thing?? and cited are examples from Apple, Nike, Coca-Cola, or Starbucks. At the heart of their success is a human truth, an experience that builds on a passion. When we are bold enough to step outside of ourselves and identify the true human need, we understand what is truly at the core of these emerging experiences and engagement and we can innovate.
